Portal to Selectable Reality
The project paired two conditions that are usually kept apart: the fixed historical material of the Yongsan Railroad Hospital and the unrealized ideas circulating through crowdfunding platforms. Their relationship was mapped along two axes—past and future, physical and virtual.
The sequence of online funding was then translated into an architectural program: introduction, display, testing, discussion, and public presentation. These stages established the order of movement before new rooms or objects were designed.
A linear wall threads through the preserved complex and acts as both route and measuring device. New volumes attach to it as legible interventions, while portals mark moments when visitors shift between existing fabric, physical prototypes, and projected possibilities.
The renovation therefore avoids choosing a single historical or technological identity. It organizes a route across selectable realities, allowing the building to remain a record of the past while becoming infrastructure for ideas that do not yet exist.
